Surfacing Paws is a public awareness campaign designed to challenge and dismantle the misconceptions that keep shelter animals waiting. Built on a foundation of research, expert insight, and empathetic storytelling, the campaign targets prospective pet owners in urban and suburban communities across the United States, particularly young adults and families who are considering pet ownership but have not yet considered adoption as their first choice.
-
Shelter animals are not broken, dangerous, or damaged. They are individuals whose circumstances were shaped by human systems such as owner hardship, housing restrictions, and misinformation, rather than any fault of their own. And yet, deeply ingrained cultural stereotypes continue to influence adoption decisions in ways that have real, measurable consequences. Animals stay in shelters longer. Facilities become overcrowded. Euthanasia rates climb. None of this is inevitable.
-
Through six campaign deliverables including a poster series, Instagram content, a trifold pamphlet, website wireframes, an email newsletter, and a campaign logo, the project builds a cohesive visual identity that meets audiences where they are: on social media, in community spaces, and online. Every piece of the campaign points toward the same call to action, which is to visit your local shelter, grounded in the belief that when communities are better informed, more animals find homes.
-
It asks audiences to look past first impressions, to see shelter animals as individuals rather than categories, and to recognize that the story they have been told about these animals is incomplete. The process book documents the research, decisions, and design work that brought that idea to life.
